Mary Jo Peckham Park, located at 5597 Gardenia Lane in Katy, is among four Houston-area sites participating in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Neighborhood Fishin’ program.

The department started stocking lakes on April 17. The catfish are being stocked at 19 Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes in 10 urban areas across the state. The other Houston-area lakes are Community Park Lake, 1700 Glenn Lakes Lane in Missouri City; Herman Little Park, 18660 Casper Drive in Spring; and Burke Crenshaw Park, 4950 Burke Road in Pasadena.

“Our Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes are conveniently located in these urban and suburban areas so that Texans don’t have to travel outside the city to have a great fishing experience,” Dave Terre, TPWD Inland Fisheries Management and Research chief, said in a news release. “Catfish are fun and easy to catch for anglers of all ages and experience levels. If you’ve never fished before these are the perfect places to get started, and if you are already an experienced angler this is a great opportunity to introduce fishing to a friend or family member.”

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, each lake will receive continuous stockings of channel catfish every two weeks through early November - with a brief pause during the heat of August - to ensure there is plenty of opportunity for families looking to spend quality time fishing together outdoors.

Anglers can keep up to five fish per day without a minimum length limit. At some locations cleaning tables are available nearby to make it easy for families to clean their catch. Children under 17 fish for free, but a fishing license is required for all adults. Fishing licenses can be purchased for as little as $11 for “one-day, all-water” access. All proceeds go toward management and conservation of the fish and their habitats.
